Caring for Your New Wood Floors

Wood flooring is an investment that can add both style and value to your home. As is the case with just about any other addition to your home in West Springfield, MA, however, there are steps you can take to properly care for your new wood floors.

Regular Cleaning

Wood floors can be cleaned on a regular basis with a dust mop or broom. You can also use the wand attachment of your vacuum cleaner for regular cleanings. Mopping is fine as long as you use a sponge mop or damp mop that's well-squeezed to avoid placing too much water on the wood. You can also keep your floors clean with:

• A soft microfiber dusting pad
• A soft dusting cloth
• A spray bottle with water and a special cleaner for wood floors

Note: Vinegar is acidic and should never be used on wood flooring since it can eat away at the coating.

Accidental Spills

If a spill occurs on your wood floor, thoroughly clean it up. Spray the surface with a cleaner appropriate for your floor type and wipe it up with a cloth. You may need to re-lacquer or re-oil the area where the spill occurred, depending on how the floor was affected.

When properly maintained, wood flooring can last anywhere from 25 to 75 year or more, depending on the type of wood you selected for your home. Your wood floor can be further protected with a high-gloss polish, with many polishes including protective agents.
